I used these gloves for 10 days in Katmai National Park. They are absolutely not waterproof. I returned them to REI for a full refund.

Great for Seattle maybe, but limited use anywhere it's cold
Before purchasing and using these gloves I tried every glove I could find at EMS, Beans, REI, and various locally owned sporting goods stores.

I was looking for a very thin glove that was as warm as possible with the hopeful added bonus of being water resistant.The goal was dexterity and warmth.The thicker the glove, the harder to pick up small objects (paper, coins, etc.).The thinner the glove, the less warmth.So I had hoped that these would be the elusive "perfect glove."

I researched dozens of sites about gloves and found that some were unhappy with Seal Skinz because they weren't good for sport (e.g. kayaking).This wasn't a problem because that's not what I needed them for.Also, Seal Skinz have an exterior fabric texture that makes them impractical for such use.These gloves don't seem to be intended for water sports.There are other gloves dedicated for that purpose.

Another criticism I found was that some users complained that these gloves made their hands feel cold and clammy.This was in fact exactly what I experienced.

I wore these gloves under running water and found one spot that allowed dampness through the fabric.Afterwards the gloves were useless for the purposes of keeping my hands warm.No matter - didn't plan on getting them that wet in everyday use.I then used the gloves in moderately low temperatures above freezing.They were fine, but I didn't really need the gloves to keep warm. Then I used them on a 20 degree day.My hands were cold and clammy within minutes.

While the gloves are somewhat ingenious - keeping water out - the whole thing seems like a gimmick.The picture of someone immersing their gloved hand in water makes these gloves look hardcore.They're not.

The only purpose I think these gloves have is for cold rainy weather and places where the temperature doesn't fall below freezing.The Pacific Northwest seems like the ideal place.Also, maybe if you're living in the mid to lower Atlantic states and you occasionally see cold weather.But for serious use these are a waste of money.

Seal Skinz sells a more expensive version of these gloves (called "chill blockers") which are lined with fleece and are supposedly intended for colder weather.I was never able to find a pair of these to test so maybe they're more practical.Still, they're very expensive and, given what I experienced with the basic model, I'm skeptical that they're worth the money.

My second choice (before I had tested the Seal Skinz) were the Seirus All Weather Gloves.They have warmth, dexterity (less than Seal Skinz however), and cost about the same as the Seal Skinz basic glove shown here.
