Good thick sock for boots
I like the thickness of these for hiking boots, not to thin.They do not cause sweaty feet like some others.They are comfortable and somewhat soft.These stayed up on my legs, others I have had roll down to the top of the boot.

Only issue I had was that the seem at the toe would bind up a few times, which can make for sore toes. Yeah, you could take the shoe/boot off and read just the sock, which is a pain.But in a cave, it is not an ideal situation to do so.I had to go with sore pinky toe, my trip was not much fun.After a few washes the problem has eased. ... Yes they do shrink
Smartwool claims that these do not shrink and they can be machine washed.After putting mine in the dryer, under the correct setting (knits), my mid weight hiking socks by Smartwool shrunk by at least 2 inches!!!

Worth the investment
Yes, I did throw out all but a few dress pairs of socks after I discovered these. I work outdoors with steel-toed boots almost all day, in all kinds of weather, and these socks are gold to me. I actually wear these with a polypropylene liner sock and have used this combo hiking in Costa Rica and the Canadian Rockies as well. This combo works best for me to keep my feet dry and a comfortable temperature. I don't have "trench foot" stink at the end of the day!

In winter, I do step up to the expedition-weight sock (still with the liner sock), and love the comfort. I also recommend folks to check out REI's version of the hiking and expedition-weight sock. They are a little better priced, and provide all the same benefits. Happy trails!
